I. Program Overview
To serve the national innovation-driven development strategy and build a new pattern of training high-end engineering talents, Tsinghua University launched its first doctoral program for innovation leadership engineering in 2018. The doctoral education for innovation leadership engineering aims to cultivate engineering innovation leadership talents with solid and broad basic theories, systematic and in-depth expertise, and the ability to solve complex technical problems, carry out technological innovation and organize the implementation of technical research and development, who are able to make innovative achievements in the engineering category. In 2023, Tsinghua University will target at national key industries, regions and innovative enterprises to enroll students for doctoral degree in engineering under seven engineering degree categories: Electronic Information (0854), Machinery (0855), Materials and Chemicals (0856), Resources and Environment (0857), Energy and Power (0858), Civil and Hydraulic Engineering (0859), and Biology and Medicine (0860).
II. Brief Introduction of “Biology and Medicine (0860)”
Under the principle of “serving the country, cross cooperation, key breakthrough and overall development”, and in view of the rapid growth of biological and pharmaceutical sectors with an urgent need to occupy the commanding heights thereof and other diversified rapid development needs, as well as the booming demand for advanced talents with biological and pharmaceutical degrees from colleges, universities, research institutes, government agencies related to the pharmaceutical industry, food and drug administration, and the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizations, and biomedicine related enterprises, Tsinghua University relies on the three first-level subjects of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Pharmacy and Medicine, with the help of the excellent faculty from the Department of Chemical Engineering, the School of Medicine, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Shenzhen International Graduate School, the Department of Chemistry and the School of Life Science, to cultivate doctoral talents for innovation leadership engineering with the academic degree of “Biology and Medicine” to meet the national development and social needs.
Training objectives of the “Biology and Medicine” category: Postgraduate students with this degree should have a broad international vision and solid professional skills, and be able to become leading talents in biotechnology, innovative drug research and development, technological innovation and pharmaceutical enterprise management in China and even in the world. Faced with the “bottlenecks” that should be addressed urgently for the people’s life and health, by closely combining the national major plans, major projects and important product research and development tasks, and highlighting the distinctive characteristics of problem-oriented engineering science, the school has created a new field of biology and medicine that covers chemical engineering and technology, life science, biomedical engineering, chemistry, pharmacy, medicine and other disciplines to cultivate all kinds of high-quality talents with the ability to integrate interdisciplinary innovation and engineering practice.
The academic degree of “Biology and Medicine” aims at the major needs of the country and the world-class standards, gives importance to innovation, emphasizes interdiscipline, and mainly sets up four directions: biotechnology and engineering, medical engineering, pharmaceutical engineering, and health engineering. Centering on the above four directions, this academic degree has attracted international top technological talents and industry leaders to form an internationally competitive faculty of reasonable structure and high integration of industry education and research, and has gathered 44 doctoral supervisors of engineering from superior majors in this field at Tsinghua University, among whom, 3 serve in two programs, and more than 90% of the teachers have obtained doctoral degrees in engineering, medicine, pharmacy and other related majors. Among the full-time faculty members, there are academicians and other subject leaders, young and middle-aged researchers, and even new young teachers, forming a research team that combines old, middle-aged and young talents. The training of postgraduate students for the academic degree of biological and pharmaceutical engineering will be carried out by way of dual supervisors or supervisor group, and deeply integrated with enterprises by engaging enterprise supervisors to jointly instruct students according to the specific needs of training. The on-campus supervisor is responsible for the thesis topic selection and the guidance for thesis writing, while the enterprise supervisor assists the on-campus supervisor to determine the thesis topic selection and gives specific guidance to the thesis research work.
